It has been nearly seven years since Newton Faulkner first stepped into the limelight with his surprising combination of ginger dreadlocks, campfire singalongs and a talent for turning an acoustic guitar into a percussion instrument. Since then, that limelight may have shifted – but try telling that to the full crowd at the O2 Academy on Saturday night. Between sips of tea from his teapot and exceedingly polite quips to the audience, Faulkner fires through his impressive back-catalogue. Tonight, the audience treat themselves less as spectators and more as the singer’s gospel choir, eager to participate whenever handclaps and backing vocals seem appropriate.
